First, I would like to explain that with the state of the economy and worldwide needs concerning natural disasters Building Champion Cylists FL just did not seem that important. Also, due to a reduction in workload on my part I deemed it appropriate to cut back on traveling and the expense of racing or competing outside of my local area. As far a efforts to raise funds for BCCFL I was not comfortable asking any individual or business for donations when there are so many other non profits, churches, private schools and organizations in great need of donations.

There is still money in the BCC account (approximately $500.00). I am asking what you want me to do with it, as I don’t see the economy to picking back up in a timely manner that might change my mind to get back to actively promoting this program. I feel there has been a significant increase in the promotion of cycling in the past two years with the availability of professional coaching, Florida Cycling Magazine and increased organization with the Road Racing scene. A number of private individuals are donating their time and knowledge in many ways.

So what to do with the $500:00

My thought. Cash Primes at this upcoming Gone Riding Fall Series races. Not sure of the criteria (fastest 3rd lap to place top 5) (most consistent lap times). What divisions?

Currently I have elected to coach Girls Track, Boys Track and Volley Ball at my daughters private school on a voluntary basis. This takes away from my time and energy level concerning this program. I had full intention of giving BCC 5yrs, but did not anticipate the changes that have taken place since the conception of the program.

Culinary Competitor: Put the spoon away - Icecream is not a meal.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 91px; height: 124px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_vlXt-K-nTW4/Sv8f_-j_g6I/AAAAAAAAAbI/23MqnHSyZyA/s320/images.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404073261854065570" />

Looking for healthy meals - check this site out.

Culinary Competitor
Alternative Meals for Active Lifestyles
Eat Well - Race Hard

About Us
Culinary Competitor is a recipe resource for participants in lifestyle sports that are fully committed to their performance, but still want to retain a little bit of lifestyle in their competitive pursuits.

Update:

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_vlXt-K-nTW4/SvhROyxcwyI/AAAAAAAAAbA/MhWY5Q5j_w0/s320/regan+mi.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402157067620107042" />

Gone Riding’s Florida State Championship has 5 Races in the Books and scores to be tallied. The Under 23 group had come on strong with Brent Hall in 3rd place and Martin Cox and Regan Woodall working to get in the top 5. Race 5 was at Oleta River State Park – now this race is difficult with the technical aspect causing slow overall times. This race is a metal game – things go wrong, crashes come out of nowhere and passing other riders can be a nightmare. The U23 group did not fair so well in the overall results under these conditions. Three races remain, drop the worst race result races then the final race at Santos, which is a must finish as the result cannot be dropped. Lets see how it shakes out.

Changes are taking place in the Florida Cycling Scene. Florida Racing Magazine is active updating the public with local and national cycling result and pertinent news. How an athlete deals with adversity during an athletic event is learned – frequently from bad experiences. You can pass the first test by not giving up - finish what you start. Now, you should be looking for answers on what to do next time via mentors, parents, and the cycling community. Keep in mind that sportsmanship, ethics, and fair play should be foremost on your mind.

Whenever the demands are the greatest is when the characteristics of mental toughness are the most evident.

Mental toughness is not an inborn DNA trait, but rather one that is developed over time and exposure to adverse conditions. Preparation in mental toughness begins with experiences at a young age. Parents can play a key role to begin the process of training mental toughness, but they need help along the way. A disciplined educational system with high expectations and good classroom rules, along with tough, but fair coaches (or mentors in other activities) with a positive mind set, is essential to developing a child mentally. I started the race as the only full on cross-country racer in the pro downhill field. After the first run I found myself in 2nd place with a time of 3:40 with the leader having an impressive 3:32. On the second run I was a little smoother and faster and almost won with a time of 3:33 - not good enough to win but gave me a secure second. All in all it was a great event and a good way to be known as one of the best technical riders in the southeast.

Saturday night was short track, which started off blistering fast and after about 4-5 minutes I found myself pushing really hard in a 4-man break. Trying to make a smart decision I backed off in hopes of holding 4th and slowly working into third by the end. I held a 4th the whole race and the top 3 surprisingly stayed pretty close together. My decision to hold back was most likely the best decision after a full day of racing and still have the cross-country race the following day.

Cross-country on Sunday started with a small packed field. My goal was to not worry about the speed at first and slowly work into the top 5 by the finish. After the first lap I found myself in 8th place with 2 guys right in front of me. Unfortunately, starting the second lap I got a sidewall tire cut and despite diligent efforts it would not seal. This was really depressing, as top 5 was seemed easily in my reach.

I have elected not to attend Nationals using the Fontana race weekend to evaluate my fitness after experiencing and overcoming some injuries and other issues typical of efforts of competing at the pro level. I am looking forward to these years Florida State Series hosted by Gone Riding and would like to thank BCCFL for the funding assistance that assisted in my opportunity to compete in the final SERC this year at Fontana. Thanks to all that donate to this program.

Junior Training Program is Getting There:

Visit - http://bccyclistsflyouthtraining.blogspot.com/

This is an introduction to structured cycling and general fitness training. Team director/manager Henry Willis says, "These two UCI races, along with the 50th Fitchburg Longsjo Classic the first week of July and the USA Cycling Junior, U23 & Elite Road National Championships the last week of July make for a full month of racing at the highest level for our nine man squad. Teams of six riders will be selected to race at each destination except Nationals which is individual competition. Florida Velo Junior Devo is a team comprised of some of the VERY BEST 17-18 year old juniors in the Southeast: AJ Meyer, Ty Magner, Will Willis, Craig Creeden, Mike Stone, Jake Arnold, Steve Rusnak, Alex Spook and John “Mato”Zuluaga. These young men were selected because they are exceptional riders and because they possess the exceptional character that Florida Velo Junior Devo believes should be the hallmark of all cyclists."
The team is funded by the riders and donations from the community and needs your support. Henry commented, "We still need to raise $4000.00 to make this summer of championship racing possible for these juniors." How bad do you want it?

Matt GoForth of OYM sent me a link to an article from GamJams.net that is relevant to the current economic times. First off, there are very few truly under privileged youth cyclists. At a minimum one has to have the money to purchase a bike and travel to races. Here is the link and below are some excerpts from the article.

“Is there a more resourceful group of people? Here are examples from the very elite. One Olympian lived in a van in a friend’s driveway so she could train full-time. Another accumulated spending money by autographing each season’s training kit and selling it at a bike swap at year’s end….

The point is if we want it bad enough, we find a way. Sometimes we find many small ways that add up…

A big part of your training plan must be income IN – your work life…
Years of living the dream of bike racing full-time on two continents taught me how to live within my means…”

Talking to the BCC riders they have picked their races and prioritizing their schedules based on available funding. Family and Friends (52%): This support or influence included financial and emotional support, instilling confidence, providing an introduction to the sport, and the provision of stability.
3. Coaches (49%): Excellent coaches throughout their development were identified as having a great influence on success.
4. Love of Sport (27%): Love of, and passion for, the sport greatly influenced success, often providing the necessary motivation to continue training in less than optimal conditions.
5. Training Programs and Facilities (22%): The opportunity to train with club, college, national level, or resident teams and access to programs and facilities was important.
6. Natural Talent (22%): A genetic predisposition or God-given talent played a role in athlete success.
7. Competitiveness (15%): A strong competitive nature and love of competition was identified as a factor influencing success.
8. Focus (13%): The ability to stay focused on goals and the task at hand, despite distractions, had a significant influence on success.
9. Work Ethic (12%): Hard work and a strong work ethic were factors that influenced success.
10. Financial Support (12%): The financial support from sources such as sponsorship, college scholarship, private donors, athlete grants, and fundraising contributed to success.

What obstacles had to be overcome to achieve success?
The second question asked Olympians to list up to five obstacles to their success. After reading the list, you’ll recognize that several of these obstacles are the “flip side” of some of the identified success factors, adding even greater strength to the importance of that factor.
1. Lack of Financial Support (53%): Some implications of lack of financial support included increased stress and insecurity, compromised training due to having to work, and inability to compete nationally and internationally.
2. Conflict with Roles in Life (33%): This related to conflict experienced in trying to balance/manage multiple roles including work, career, school, family, and athletic endeavors.
3. Lack of Coaching Expertise or Support (29%): This related to having coaches with limited knowledge or expertise as well as conflicts with the coach.
4. Lack of Support from USOC and NGB (22%): Issues with these organizations included a lack of mental preparation programs, no organization or encouragement, and being too bureaucratic.
5. Mental Obstacles (22%): This includes such obstacles as low confidence, perfectionism, and dealing with pressure.
6. Lack of Training/Competition Opportunities (20%).
7. Medical Problems (20%): Injuries, illness, and other medical issues, as would be expected, were perceived as an obstacle to athletic success.
8. Lack of Social Support (11%): Family, friends and peers who provided little or no support and at times even discouraged athletic pursuits were perceived as obstacles.
9. Physical Limitations (8%): Identified limitations included characteristics such as height, weight, strength and endurance.
10. Failure (6%): This related to a fear of failure and learning to deal with failure.

Way to go Jamie Knight

At 17 Jamie wins the Dade City Criterium as a CAT 3: Results

This does not happen just because you have talent. The keys to optimum recovery are sleep and diet. Even though we recommend that everyone eat a diet similar to what our Stone Age ancestors ate, we realize that nutritional concessions must be made for the athlete who is training at a high volume in the range of 10 to 35 or more hours per week of rigorous exercise. Rapid recovery is the biggest issue facing such an athlete. While it’s not impossible to recover from such training loads on a strict Paleo Diet, it is somewhat more difficult to recover quickly. By modifying the diet before, during, and immediately following challenging workouts, the Paleo Diet provides two benefits sought by all athletes: quick recovery for the next workout, and superior health for the rest of your life.”

This is a good site from Training Bible Coaching http://www.trainingbible.com/resources.aspx

Hello:

Building Champion CyclistsFl is a program directed toward national competition. Thus, I have let each of you to do your thing. Those that have a coach, I hope you did your best and kept a log so there is information to reference for next year. Everyone’s motivation, dedication and perseverance has certainly inspired me. Each of you has finished each race despite the difficulties that have surely tried to pull you down. Jamie has dominated the SS class and Martin, Regan and Brent are each in the top five or the Pro/Expert Class.

Fund Raising:
Due to the election and the questionable economy I have saved my emotional energy concerning obtaining donations. I will be getting back to that come December and have various ideas. There is current approximately $1200.00 remaining so regardless of what additional funding is developed there is something for the summer of 2009.

The Off Season:
Take the time to do some sport training research. Whatever core work, lifting or general exercises you have been doing it is time to find some new ones and rotate types of activity. Fire up some new muscles by using them in a different way; this will stimulate your system and encourage grown hormone release and help recovery from a long race series.

Kurt

Coaching Opportunity

Dean is a USA Certified Coach (level III) and is dedicated to developing endurance athletes. Again, Dean really wants to work with someone who really has an open mind and is willing to commit to the plan.

Contact:
dyobbi@trainingbible.com
info@buildingchampioncyclistsfl.net

Race #1 #2

BCCyclists Member results:

Pro/Semi Pro/Expert - Race 1 - Martin Cox 4th, Regan Woodall 6th, Brent Hall 11th.
Single Speed Class - Jamie Knight 1st

Race 2 - Regan Woodall 3rd, Martin Cox 4th, Brent Hall 11th
Single Speed Class - Jamie Knight 1st.

Free Coaching Junior Development Recipients:

Race 1 Junior 15 - 18 Male - Austin Cox (unattached).
Race 2 David Berg ENDURANCE FACTOR / BIKECHAIN.COM
Receives a $75.00 coupon for free coaching.
Junior 15 - 18 Female _____

Race 1 Junior 11 - 14 Male - Max Baggaley (Goldtec)
Race 2 Race 2 Alex Meucci MEUCCI of SPOKES CYCLING & FITNESS
Receives a coupon for a free technical riding class or a race lap evaluation with Martin Cox or a BCCyclists affiliate.
Junior 11 - 14 Female _____

Welcome Aboard Shelly Allen and Bob Mc Carty

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_vlXt-K-nTW4/SMxZHCT3JUI/AAAAAAAAAQQ/J2sZw3L8_Hc/s200/Bob+McCarty" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245665643393918274" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_vlXt-K-nTW4/SMxY9HN01SI/AAAAAAAAAQI/hrgLteCbw9U/s200/shellyallen_hof.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245665472912086306" />

Shelly and Bob will be providing their services of a free techincal class or race lap evaluation for the respective race winners of the 11 - 14 junior racers. It's amazing how many athletes put in the training hours, do intervals, recovery rides, long endurance rides, etc. but then miss the nutrition piece. Once you realize that training & nutrition go hand in hand, you will be amazed at the gains you will make in your performance and in your body. Not only will we focus on the on-the-bike nutrition, but we will also address the off-the-bike daily nutrition. Every body's schedules, needs, and preferences are different so I can work with each of you individually to make sure you have a great nutrition plan to fit your specific needs. If this is something you are interested in, please contact me through my website and we will get started. I will need to gather some basic information from you about your nutritional intake, your goals, and your training/racing schedule.

I work with many types of athletes, but mostly with cyclists and triathletes. I also currently work with the college students at Georgia State University. You can learn more about me by visiting my website.

Thanks, and I look forward to working with you!

Training Logs Are Not An Option

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_vlXt-K-nTW4/SL0_-bNfvNI/AAAAAAAAAP4/PgbArzCa3Lo/s200/New+BCC+Logo.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241415883017927890" />
Rider Status and Recourses: As of August 2008, BCCyclistsFL was able to release funds to Martin Cox and Brent Hall. Riders must specify when the money is needed and for what national race(s). No funds will be released to BCC members unless the rider's coach states they are ready to compete at a national level. Endurance Factors basic program is $100 per month and if a rider wishes to upgrade the coaching program it will be at their expense. On Your Mark is providing a hard copy 4-month annual training program ($150 value). On Your Mark can be upgraded to monthly contact for an additional $50.00 a month. Known for its long climb and the decent of “Blood Rock” our Local #1 Pro, Ryan Woodall took the win for the second year in a row. Word is Ryan sat in for the first half of the race and just waited to see who had the goods. Well Ryan reeled them in and won with a four (4) minutes margin. Results

Moving on to the Bccyclists Riders. Not much of a showing in the Junior Category, which is rather disappointing for the growth of the sport. Must be the gas prices. Regardless Jamie Knight and Brent Hall went head-to-head for two 18-mile laps. Brent seemed to be in control for the climbs with Jamie dominating with his inspiring bike handling skills on the way down. This race came down to a sprint with Jamie taking the win with a time of 2:29.50 and yes Brent also rode a 2:29.50. Regan Woodall sat this one out recovering from a knee issue which seems to have been corrected after his coach Matt Goforth provided him with Laser Bike fits for both his road bike and MTB bike and supplied him with some foot beds to correct any mechanical issues with his gait.

Martin Cox at age 18 raced the Semi Pro Race coming in 5th in a time of 2:25.36. Once again his Coach Drew Edsall of Endurance Factor bested Martin with Drew now ranked #1 in the USA for Semi Pro’s.

Martin and Jamie also raced in California Nationals earlier in the month with some very respectable finishes. To expand on this, for any of you planning on consecutive days of racing or back to back hard training days avoiding glycogen depletion by properly feeding your muscles is very important. A time trial or short track race the day before the XC race may not require the intake of simple or complex sugars to complete, however, not fueling the body during the effort will require your body to dip into the stored glycogen in your muscles. This glycogen can take 36 to 48 hours to replace. Thus, read the article and conduct any additional research that is required.

Education for Injury Prevention

Every athlete with a goal knows how hard it can be to back off on the training when there is pain. This program will provide a few gentle pushes and, if necessary, frank advice for how to accomplish ambitious goals. What are those ambitious goals? To become an athlete. Building Champion Cyclists maintains that top-level athleticism is not just about going fast on a bicycle. Participation and competition in athletics should include efforts to learn more about oneself and the world. We seek to provide guidance in the following areas: managing goals and the challenges presented by elite competition; nurturing the importance of teamwork and self-confidence; instilling the symbiotic relationship between failure and success. Building Champion Cyclists mentors young cyclists, who might otherwise, due to lack of support, abandon a promising athletic path and thereby lose the opportunity to learn about themselves and the world.

From time to time, an athlete dreams of the Olympics or of becoming a professional athlete. Everyone knows that few actually have the talent and fortitude to find a path to accomplish this dream. But there must also be emphasis on sport as an integral part of one’s total life education - a unique way of understanding your body, testing yourself, and working with other people. Athletes can learn from the lessons of participation and competition, along with constantly required and expected good sportsmanship. Respect—for the opponent, official, coach, spectator and teammate—is the foundation of enjoying athletics and understanding its value.

At Building Champion Cyclists, we believe that if there is a young cyclist from the state of Florida who has the ability (and done the work) to place well at a National Championship of his or her respective discipline, that cyclist should have the opportunity to attend the event, even if he or she does not have the funds to attend. Secondly, able young cyclists who have not done the work—perhaps due to ignorance or lack of support—will be mentored, as outlined above, and be taught the necessary steps to success.

Building Champion Cyclists Florida also seeks to promote the overall sport of Cycling in Florida and to generate more interest in cycling enthusiasts and the young cyclists who enjoy the sport. Many young cyclists might not have considered how far their so-called hobby can take them. Sure, this sport is not going to be a lucrative career (except for a select few), but that does not mean one should not follow a dream and ride at a high level, even while continuing on to higher education or advancing into the business/labor pool.

It seems that in 2008 there has been an increased number of Florida cyclists taking their talents beyond the Southeastern United States to prominent national races. Building Champion Cyclists Florida feels that the efforts of these cyclists should be conveyed to the public in general and certainly made available to Florida’s cycling community. Thus, I ask that those capable provide a summary of the occurrences and results of national races. Building Champion Cyclists Florida has developed a News Page that can be used to post articles and results of Florida Cyclists’. This News Page is not limited to writing about the members of the program (Martin Cox, Brent Hall, Chris Janiszewski, Regan Woodall and Jamie Knight) but wishes to extend to any Florida Cyclists that is striving to achieve at the national or international level. Thus, I am pleading for your assistance in promoting these athletes and the sport of cycling. With assistance from you, this Cycling News can evolve into an actual News Page publication, a separate entity from the website.

In the six short months that this program has been in existence, I have been very pleased with its development. A static website, BuildingChampionCyclistsFl.net, has been established that outlines the program and lists the cyclists currently being sponsored. A News Page, buildingchampioncyclistsfl-news.blogspot.com, has been developed along with cyclists’ individual blogs. Sponsors are listed and thanked for their contributions, along with the continued development of additional sponsors and donations received. The program is slowly gaining recognition and intends to keep striving to assist the deserving young men and women cyclists. I have various new ideas, which I intend to implement in the near future, and I request any assistance from the public in reaching these goals. One thing in the works is a journalistic web site to report on Florida cyclists’ results at national and major Florida racing events.

This is probably a separate topic:
In conclusion, as time permits, I hope to continue with efforts to develop a source of information concerning continued education opportunities of colleges that either provides cycling clubs, college racing and scholarship opportunities. In addition to this, developing a program of career guiding that might assist the young athletes in advancing their careers with guidance for developing career choices and resumes development. Should anyone have any input concerning the aforementioned aspects please feel free to contact me.

Now I must ask – Did you ride today?

Written by Kurt Leverett and edited by Ryan Walsh.

National Schedule

Thought I would post the 2008 US National Mountain Bike Calendar (NMBC)
Cross Country: Endurance MultiV is the first multivitamin that’s clinically proven to improve endurance. Multi-V is the only multivitamin that contains Carbogen™. This patented enzyme blend has been shown in clinical studies to improve carbohydrate utilization, and increase time to exhaustion significantly.

EFS is an Electrolyte Fuel System developed by 1st Endurance.
Thank You Matt

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_vlXt-K-nTW4/R_VpXeuA61I/AAAAAAAAALg/xrhT5kEZ1lE/s200/publixLogo.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185166398090963794" />
Thanks to Regan Woodall taking the time to provide me with the address for Publix Community Relations I sent them a donation proposal and the Building Champion Cyclists Fl Press Release. I was not expecting, nor requesting, a large donation, but simply requested a monetary donation to purchase nutritional and hydration products. Publix graciously responded with a $100 gift card. I intend to purchase powdered Gatorade, and nutritional bars for the BCC Cyclists with this generous donation. I will also be purchasing some Emergency or Airborne for when they travel to help maintain their health.

Each rider that was in attendance at the Lakeland Urban Crit was provided the above items. The intent is to assure the BCC members have supplies for traveling and a edge to assist them in staying healthy when traveling and training at a high level. In addition, a used part sale was conducted generating $60.00 in cash sales. Additional donations were obtained for future use. Thanks to Mike Hall (aka Mondo) for providing a complete Polar Heart rate kit with sensors and software (a $350 value) to Regan Woodall. A Race Face triple MTB chain ring kit was provided to Martin Cox and Raymond Wells of Red Trail Racing donated three large bottles of hammer gel with the pocket size drinking bottle. Kurt Phillips provided more than a dozen used jerseys. Anyone I missed, thanks - Steve and Chris - helped man the parts sale, collected donated items and are eager to continue helpling the program.

THANK YOU PUBLIX AND ALL MENTIONED ABOVE.

SERC # 1:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_vlXt-K-nTW4/R97dJJuMOXI/AAAAAAAAALQ/YG_Nu40yCHM/s400/P3150089.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5178819770820868466" />
Well the first SERC race is in the books.

Review by Drew Edsall – Endurance Factor Coach and Kurt Leverett:

Semi Pro/Pro
1st: Matt Hadley (pro from Canada)
2nd: Victor Alber
3rd: Ryan Woodall

Senior Expert:
1st: Craig Evans
2nd: Seth(KHS rider)
3rd: Regan Woodall

Both categories (Semi Pro/Pro and Expert) were fairly stacked. It was a tough, hot day and the direction of the trail was the tougher direction making it an even harder race. One of the toughest races and most competitive I (Drew)have been in!

Jamie: Jamie placed 5th in the Senior Expert 19-29 class. After speaking with him, he said that at this race he felt more consistent lap times and stronger then in the FSC races. With the base work he has been doing this is right where he should be. With some more high intensity work starting up ASAP, he should be right where he needs to be for his more important races.

Martin: After a very good start putting Martin in a solid 2nd place position in an extremely competitive Semi-Pro / Pro field, Martin unfortunately broke his chain within 2 minutes of the start. Not the best race for Martin, but he felt confident that he will do well in the upcoming race in Macon, GA 2 weeks from now. He, like Jamie, is coming off base work and looks to be right where he should be at this time of the year.

Regan: Placed 3rd in the Expert Class ahead of all other Florida riders. His view point of the day, “Though Race”.

Brent: Have not heard from the newest member, Brent Hall. He finished his first expert race with 8th place and a sound butt kicking, so he had a good day. Just kidding Brent - racing expert at age 17 and having the guts to pace yourself and finish it up. Congrats.

For a detailed story check out the riders blogs (to the right).

For results visit: GoneRiding.com

New BCCyclistsFL Member

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_vlXt-K-nTW4/R9siWJuMOVI/AAAAAAAAALA/SRSP4LfDVj4/s320/brent07.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5177769960554641746" />
Brent Hall Age:17 / City: Lakeland / Shop: Bent’s Cycling / MTB

Visit his blog for more information. The first article was provided by Drew Edsall of Endurance Factor.

The 2008 Florida Mountain Bike Cross Country Scene

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_vlXt-K-nTW4/R8wsyD8bj1I/AAAAAAAAAJ0/HZO-zdnfiRs/s400/Regan+background+photo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5173559310505709394" />
The 2008 mountain biking XC session is rapidly approaching with the first South Eastern Regional Championship (SERC) sponsored by Gone Riding is being held at Gainesville, Florida (Haile's Trails) on March 16, 2008 followed by Bryson City, NC (Tsali trails) on April 6, 2008. Well the 12 Hrs of Santos, in Belleview, Florida presented by Gone Riding is in books and mother earth provided excellent weather and near perfect trail condition for the 8 to 9 mile course with about two miles of top notch technical trails (red trails). First off – Congratulations Harvey Minton for his 12hr solo win. I had the pleasure of riding with him at the 8 to 11hr mark and I must say the guy was still flowing along and lucid as if he was at the 4 hour mark. Chris did not have the best of races cramping early and never recovering as of darkness when he decided to pack it in and save it for another day. As for the Building Champion Cyclist Fl riders. Regan Woodall teamed up with his brother Ryan Woodall, Trent Maddox and Bob McCarty for a solid win the Expert/Pro category. Martin Cox, Drew Edsal, Jamie Knight and Mark Gerard teamed up and took a solid 2nd place. Jamie Knight managed to pull off a blazing sub 42 minute lap during his night time lap to keep the team on the same lap as the leaders. Durango is known for its vast array of outdoor activities. It plays host to some of the best mountain bikers in the US including Ned Overand, Todd Wells, and Travis Brown.
Martin and I hope to gain an advantage over the competition by living and training at high altitudes for a month. With proper training and nutrition, living and training at levels above 4000 feet has shown to increase an athlete’s VO2 max. More specifically, living at a high altitude for 3-4 weeks results in an increase in red blood cell volume. Red blood cells are responsible for transferring oxygen throughout your body. By increasing your body’s ability to transport oxygen, you are able to put more power to your pedals.
Martin and I will be in Durango for the month of June, where we will live, train, and also compete in the National Mountain Bike Series (NMBS) race held in Park City, Utah. We will then head to New York for the NMBS #5, followed by the National Championships in Mount Snow, Vermont. After a great summer of training at high altitudes in Durango, Colorado, both of us anticipate great results in these three races. We hope to see many of you at the upcoming races, including the 12 Hours of Santos, SERC #1 in Gainesville, and Bump and Grind in Birmingham.

Drew Edsall
www.endurancefactor.com

Jamie Knight of Team Bent's will be competing in the Red Trail Racing Free Ride Dirt Jump Competition this coming Sunday.
